Maputo, 10 October (AIM) – The port of Maputo, the largest in Mozambique, will proceed with a new dredging of the access channel in order to allow the entry of larger vessels with a larger loading capacity.

This initiative opens up new prospects for the growth of port operations.

The official site of the port of Maputo indicates that dredging will improve the navigation channels, which allow the entry and exit of ships, in order to accommodate larger vessels with greater loading capacity.

This intervention should strengthen the operational capacity of the port, facilitate the transport of larger volumes of goods and contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the port of Maputo on regional and international maritime trade routes.

The port of Maputo is located southwest of Mozambique, on the left bank of the Matola River.

It comprises two important areas, namely the commercial port of Maputo and the industrial complex of Matola.

Access to the port is via two channels, the Xefina and Polana, of a length of 9.3 km and 7.5 km respectively. Their depth varies between 11 and 14 meters.

Access to the Matola mineral wharf is via the same channel, which is 3,100 metres long and nine metres deep under normal conditions, and 12.9 metres during high tides.

The port of Maputo includes fishing, cabotage, miscellaneous goods, coal, fruit, sugar, containers and steel terminals, as well as molasses tanks, over a length of approximately 3,876 metres.

The mineral wharf includes coal, oil, grain and aluminum terminals for a total length of 865 metres.

Currently, according to this source, the port of Maputo has a total cargo handling capacity of about 17 million metric tons per year.
